According to the New York Times, French was made the official language of the Olympics to honor the native tongue of Baron Pierre de Coubertin, founder of the International Olympic Committee.

French is the most commonly spoken language other than English in four states: Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Louisiana. There is even a "Welcome to Louisiana" road sign that is written in French!
